Here is a story of a boy in board shorts, riding waves and living for summers. A boy who turned into a graphic designer and a graphic designer who left South Africa for London and returned to a photographic killing machine.

Jacques Weyers will tell you that his big break was the “being in the right place at the right time” cliché. However, his work tells a different story. This photographer is constantly pushing the envelope and continuously producing masterpieces. Fashion was the niche that he chose as it afforded him full control over all the elements involved. Time and time again he reminds us of why he chose fashion; you can see how he masters and manipulates these elements, creating impeccable shots.

He won’t tell you his style is unique, he leaves that up for the viewers to decide. He does however have a preference for colour and low depth of field and a propensity for bringing all the elements in a shot together. His motivations are found in the clichés, the people and world around him.

With 12 years of experience in the industry, Jacques shares a piece of indispensable advice for up and coming photographers; “Take time to understand the brands you are shooting for and always consider their needs. When clients see you have their best interests at heart they will keep coming back.”

The shoot he did for Plus27 was inspired by an amazing location that was about to be demolished, and its Victorian feel was part of that inspiration. He used various continuous light sources; torches, mirrors and party lights. They were all low out-put lighting that added to the soft drama that he wanted for his images. Jacques’ editorial tells the story of the abandoned doll house; the models were positioned like dolls that have been abandoned and forgotten and the only sign of life is in their eyes as though they were finally being rediscovered by the viewer.

Jacques Weyers is a monstrous force to be reckoned with in the world of fashion and photography. He has mauled his way to the top. This man cannot be stopped. Recently whilst shooting in Thailand he had a stomach bug but even a violent projectile inducing bug could not stop him from getting the job done. That in itself is testament that this beast of a photographer cannot be immobilised.
